California Tried to Force Pro-Life Centers to Promote Abortion. Now, the Supreme Court Is Weighing In.

Published November 27, 2017 by The Daily Signal: On Nov. 13, the Supreme Court announced it will hear arguments in a case with serious implications for free speech nationwide.

In National Institute of Family and Life Advocates vs. Becerra, the court will decide whether pro-life advocates must refer clients to abortion clinics or face fines, penalties, and possible closure.

The basic question the court must decide is whether the government can force pregnancy resource centers to speak a message that they fundamentally disagree with. California says yes. The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) says no.

The implications are stark for Americans across the board, Americans as diverse pro-life advocates, anti-war flag burners, and NFL anthem kneelers. None should be forced to follow government speech. The government may as well be able to force Alcoholics Anonymous to advertise for beer, or to force Hindus to advertise the sale of hamburger meat. Read More

Hawaii Pregnancy Centers Go to Court Over Law Requiring They Promote Abortions

Published September 22, 2017 by The Daily Signal: The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) and Calvary Chapel Pearl Harbor’s “A Place for Women” pregnancy care center filed the lawsuit on July 12. Hawaii’s law, Senate Bill 501, went into effect July 11.

NIFLA founder and President Thomas Glessner said in a statement to The Daily Signal that the law is detrimental for pro-life institutions. “Hawaii’s threat to pro-life pregnancy care centers and medical clinics counts among the most egregious violations of constitutional religious and free speech rights in the nation,” Glessner said.

The law, Alliance Defending Freedom says, dictates that pregnancy care centers provide funding and referrals for abortion. Read More

All Americans should care about this First Amendment case

Published July 7, 2017 by Fox News: “First Amendment cases are very much on the national mind these days, and the news from the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) is very encouraging for those who believe in strong protections for constitutional freedoms. The court delivered a First Amendment victory last week in a case involving religious free exercise, and kept alive hope for victories in two other cases where the hot button issues of same-sex marriage and abortion are involved.” Read More

Defunding Planned Parenthood Would Lead to Thousands More Births, CBO Says

Published March 14, 2017 by the Washington Post: “The CBO report is limited in value,” Tom Glessner, president of the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, an umbrella group of 1,400 of these centers, said in a statement. “Planned Parenthood should be defunded because its business is based upon killing unborn children. Beyond any and all other reasons, defunding should take place for this reason.” Read More

Hawaii Senate Passes Bill Forcing Church to Refer Women to Abortion Clinics

On Wednesday, the Hawaii Senate passed a bill forcing pro-life pregnancy resource centers (PRCs) to refer women to state-provided medical assistance programs which include abortion. This law is particularly troubling because one PRC in Hawaii is actually housed inside a church, so the law would mandate that a church post a notice referring women to a service which includes abortion. The Law that Could Force Pro-Lifers to Promote Abortions

Pro-life activists are upset after Hawaii's senate passed a bill that forces pregnancy centers to promote abortions. These centers work hard to support women in crisis pregnancies and give them options besides abortion. However, that help could soon come to an end if the bill is officially passed into law. Hawaii Abortionists Could Soon Sue Churches For Being Pro-Life

Hawaii has taken awful to a whole new level. The state senate passed SB 501, which requires crisis pregnancy centers to inform and refer women to abortionists. The measure passed 22-3. This bill was a copycat of California’s terrible so-called “FACT Act,” which is winding its way toward the Supreme Court. Read More

SCOTUS to Consider Law Forcing Pro-Life Centers to Become “Abortion Referral Agencies”

A pro-life lawyer defending pregnancy resource centers (PRCs) announced that his law firm is appealing its First Amendment lawsuit to the United States Supreme Court. According to him, a certain California law would require pro-life pregnancy centers to endorse abortion clinics, thus violating their rights to free speech and religious freedom.

“In essence, the law mandates that pro-life centers become abortion referral agencies, totally against their convictions, against their foundational beliefs, compelling speech,” Tom Glessner, president and CEO of the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA), told PJ Media in an interview at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).
